The official transfer took place from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, where Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma jointly pressed a remote button to initiate the payments.

First Instalment of Rabi Crop Claims Released

Under PMFBY, farmers receive financial compensation for crop losses caused by floods, droughts, unseasonal rains, and other natural disasters. Today’s release included the first instalment of Rabi crop insurance claims, bringing a much-needed financial boost to millions of farmers.

Farmers from 23 states were connected virtually to the event, while nearly 35,000 farmers from Rajasthan attended in person.

How Much Money Was Released?

In total, the Union Government transferred ₹3,900 crore to farmers under PMFBY today.

  • Madhya Pradesh farmers received a significant share, with ₹1,156 crore credited directly into their accounts.
  • The payments were made under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system to ensure transparency and speed.

Who Can Apply for PMFBY?

If you have not yet registered for PMFBY for the upcoming Kharif season, it’s important to act fast:

  • For farmers without crop loans: The last date to apply is 14 August.
  • For farmers with crop loans: The last date is 31 August.

This crop insurance scheme covers food crops, oilseeds, commercial crops, and horticultural crops approved by the government.

Required Documents for PMFBY Registration

To apply for crop insurance under PMFBY, farmers need the following:

  • Passport-size photograph
  • Bank passbook
  • Aadhaar card
  • Identity proof
  • Land ownership documents
  • Crop declaration form

Farmers can apply online through pmfby.gov.in or offline at the nearest bank, cooperative society, or Common Service Centre (CSC). Applications must be submitted within 10 days of sowing the crop to be eligible.

Premium Rates for PMFBY

The scheme is designed to keep farmer contributions low, with the remaining premium paid by the Central and State Governments:

  • Kharif crops: 2% of the sum insured
  • Rabi crops: 1.5% of the sum insured
  • Commercial & horticultural crops: 5% of the sum insured

Notably, farmers in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and North Eastern states pay zero premium as the government covers the entire cost.

Interest on Delayed Payments

If an insurance company or bank delays payment of claims beyond the stipulated time, they are required to pay 12% annual interest to farmers. This ensures that compensation is timely and that farmers are not left waiting during financial distress.
